Homicide or Suicide?
Homicide or suicide is the question we were asked to answer, when we were retained in this matter. The photo above and those below depict a death that occurred in 1986, they were taken by our firm in 1991 as the dates on the photos clearly show. How did we do that? I will address that question in a moment, but first I must explain why we took them. Let me briefly explain the case. Our client, a relative of the victim retained our firm to prove that this was not suicide but murder. At the time we became involved the official cause of death was listed as undetermined. The case occurred in the State of Georgia in a rural area. We have a reputation for being non-prejudiced, non-judgemental and very thorough. And we are. So when the client told us that they believed that this case was not properly investigated because the victim was African-American and the police and medical examiners office were Caucasian and "that's just the way things are in rural Georgia", let's just say I was extremely skeptical. However, when I was told that the deceased ( a female) was discovered less than 100 yards from the front door of her residence after the police and her husband had been searching for her for weeks and then was only found because a nearby resident's pet dog brought home a piece of the deceased women's scalp with hair still intact and was found chewing it in the yard, we became a little more curious about efforts made to find this women and investigate the cause and manner of her death. Take a look at the Official report of the Medical Examiner including autopsy and the rest of the photos below, and I will continue. Click on each frame to enlarge for viewing.

Back to our discussion of this Cold Case. Our client informed us that the deceased women was a professional, and employed in the educational field at the time of her death. Did not believe that she was despondent, depressed or suicidal. She was however not getting along well with her spouse. And had informed the client and others that she was contemplating a divorce, in the months leading up to her death. Does this make the husband a suspect? In a case like this, the husband, partner or "significant other" would always be a suspect. But first (in most cases) the death would have to be ruled a homicide or at least "suspicious" to pursue an investigation. Remember, this case was ruled undetermined. In the above photos, you will notice red arrows. In the top right photo, the red arrow indicates the jaw and some teeth present. Many times a corpse can be identified using dental work. But this body had already been identified using the Georgia drivers license found with the body. Between the "nightgown and jumpsuit"of the deceased. This was convenient. In the lower left photo the red arrow points to the pill bottle of the medication that may have been used by the women to take her own life. In another photo (not included for space) an empty orange juice container is visible. Is this what the women used to wash down all the pills? Maybe. Even though 39 pills (marked "RIKER") were found in the bottle. The lower right photo shows a Bible which the women may have been reading, while she was waiting for the medication to take deadly effect. Maybe. Or are these signs of "Staging". If a person new that they were going to commit suicide and be found in public, they will usually leave things in the way they want for a variety of reasons. Could the women have been quarreling with her husband, put on clothing in a hurry (jumpsuit over nightgown?) tried to get away and he killed her? Maybe. Cases of domestic violence often turn in to murder cases. How about the type of medication in the bottle (most of which was still there) if she had taken all of it would it have killed her? I said in the first part of this discussion that I would talk about how the photos were taken. Here we go. As you might imagine the police were not very sympathetic to our cause. If the client's allegations were true, there might be repercussions for the department and possibly civil rights implications. They were not helpful at all. However, we presented ourselves as documentary film makers looking into "undetermined" deaths all over the nation. Most law enforcement officers and agencies shy from the media and publicity in general. We felt however, that these officers for a variety of reasons might be different. We were right. The camera's were something of an aphrodisiac for them. They allowed us to take photos of their crime scene photos. During the course of our investigation, we found out that there was a great deal of land owned by this large family of which our client was a member. As we got closer and closer to answers, our client began to pressure us to confront the husband (whom if the client was right would be the chief suspect) with our findings. Why would we want to do that? That is a job for the police. More importantly, why would they want that. Here's the answer. Because while we were confronting the husband, they wanted us to present the husband with a contract to sign over his portion of the family land! As far as we could tell at that point, they (the client) never cared how their loved one died. Our entire case was now based on what they intended (from the beginning) to be thinly veiled threats to the husband, to turn over the land he inherited in the death of his wife. Or possibly be implicated in the death of his wife, whether he was innocent or not. This taught us we sometimes must investigate our clients or at least their motives, as well as the case we are presented with. Well, how does it turn out? Was it a murder? Did we find the answers? What did we do with the information? What did we do about the client? All of these questions and more will be answered in my coming book. I will let you read the answers to these and other questions raised in this area of our website. But you must participate in the project. Send me an e-mail and let me know what you think about the story and our site. In return, I will answer every e-mail and put you on our mailing list, then as chapters become available, I will e-mail an advance preview to each chapter. Send your thoughts, comments and input, positive and / or negative to comments@caulfieldinvestigations.com Speaking of checking out the clients motives, scroll down and have a look at the next case. A case where I was forced to testify against my own client and he was sent to state prison. Truth can be stranger than fiction!

Above at left is a subpoena commanding Max to come to court and testify. At right is a note from the prosecutor thanking Max, as well as a photo of this convicted offender. This case occurred before Stalking laws went into effect. This offender who used several alias names, posed as a client and retained our firm. He claimed that he was searching for his "long lost love" for the past five years. More accurately, "stalking" for the past five years, since they only had one 2 hour date, that ended badly. With the young women telling him she never wanted to see him again. Fortunately Max became suspicious of this client and did not divulge her location to him. Unfortunately he did discover her whereabouts using other means. After locating her apartment building, he broke in (she worked as a flight attendant and was out of town) to her apartment and slashed all of her clothing and furniture. He then slashed himself with the same razor and wrote a note to her on the bedroom wall using his own blood for ink! Now he sat down and waited for the young women. He did not know, due to her work and the travel it entails, she would be gone for several days. He then began to get frustrated. When he could wait no longer, he set fire to the apartment building. There were four apartments in the building. At this time he fled the jurisdiction, for Hawaii. He was taken into custody a short time later by the Honolulu police department, an arrest we were able to help facilitate. At this time he was extradited back to the state of Washington (this occurred in Seattle). During the trial for residential burglary and arson (no stalking law yet) Max was declared an "Expert Witness" in the area of Private Investigation and Surveillance Methods. The offender (now defendant) also made repeated death threats to Max and the Judge in open court. The defendant had to be restrained in court and was kept in a strait jacket when he was not at the defense table with court in session. After being convicted, and at his sentencing hearing some weeks later. The judge asked him if he had anything to say before he imposed the sentence. He did not. The Judge sentenced him to five years in state prison with no early release. The defendant then asked the Judge if he could speak. The Judge said yes. The defendant then told the Judge in a normal and controlled voice, "Your Honor I'm glad your sending me to prison, cause I'm going to work out and lift weights everyday and get real strong" then screaming at the top of his lungs he stated, "cause when I get out, I'm gonna come back here and kick your fuckin ass." The defendant was then dragged kicking and screaming from the courtroom by sheriff's deputy's. I will give a more in depth account of this case in my book, such as what was in the note the offender wrote in his own blood and what the family of the young women endured during this five year nightmare. All of these questions and more will be answered in my coming book. I will let you read the answers to these and other questions raised in this area of our website. But you must participate in the project. Send me an e-mail and let me know what you think about the story and our site. While were on the subject of Stalkers, meet Scott Matthews. Once a respected South Florida private investigator, who owned his own airplane. Max and Christine worked for Scott's detective agency when they first came to Florida. Then Scott discovered the "Joy of Crack Cocaine." He would soon become a pathetic addict and a stalker. And end up in a Florida penitentiary. The complete story of our involvement with Scott will be in my book. It's quite a story.

In 1989 Max was working in Seattle as a private investigator for Suggs investigations. He was hired by a chain of grocery stores to find out why large amounts of merchandise (meat) was missing. One day Max arrested the women in the photo at upper left. This photo shows the way her cart looked when she walked out of the store. The photo at left shows the cart after Max pulled it apart. Further investigation of this subject led to the arrests of 3 additional subjects responsible for the theft of over $15.000.00 US of meat from the food retailer. Click photos to view.

The next set of photos are from Max's involvement with Robert M. Suggs. As chronicled in the book "Once upon a time in Hollywood" by author Rod Lurie. Lurie who Directed the film "The Last Castle" with Robert Redford and the film "The Contender" with Jeff Bridges also at one time did the movie reviews for L.A. Magazine. The story was also recounted on numerous television programs and in many newspaper and magazine articles. Max and Christine gave unprecedented access to their personal files and recollection of the case, to not only Rod Lurie but Larry King Live, Americas Most Wanted, Inside Edition, Hard Copy, A Current Affair, Unsolved Mystery's, L.A. Times, Arizona Republic, and many other news organizations. They assisted police agencies in California, Washington, and Arizona. And worked closely with the FBI in solving this case. A case where Robert M. Suggs went from being Max's employer and best friend to being the subject of the largest manhunt on the west coast. A great deal has been written about this case. It has been dubbed "The James Dean Murders" by Hollywood insiders. In Max's coming book he will tell his personal account of the story. An account only he knows because...he was there The photos here, some of which have never been seen before are just a few from Max's personal collection.
