FAQs

Is there a minimum age to rent from you?

We prefer to do business with clients who are actually twenty-five years and older due to our insurance coverage restrictions. However, depending on your situation, whenever we can, we try to be accommodating.

If you are younger than twenty-five, consider checking with your insurer to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Could you accommodate families with children?

Of course! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this is an issue, we also provide an extra tent with each of our packages which you could set up on the ground beside your camper vehicle. This can be much more comfortable for you and also your little ones.

What is the max. capacity of your camping vehicles?

We could accommodate three individuals at most, though in case there are more in your group, we do offer an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to accommodate up to five individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a fee. Simply tell us in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we get a guide or perhaps a map with the nicest beaches and hiking trails to check out on Kauai?

Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Specifics About Camping Permits

Can I go to any beach front to camp?

You could go to any beach, however, you should only set up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We will give you a list of the greatest places to check out and to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we just go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping is not permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in specific locations with a current camping permit. The charge is roughly $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private camp sites could be a bit more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you have complete access to facilities, such as washrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Could you recommend any Kauai camp sites where we can set up the roof top tent?

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?

It’s a better to get your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.

If you decide to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

Non-residents must pay 3 dollars per night beforehand. Accepted payment methods with this application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to book your camping permits before your arrival. You can also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

How long will it take to obtain the camping permits?

No matter whether you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to receive your permits. You may choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them on the spot.
